About this list

Nearly every entry on this list is a Verein: a chess club or the chess department of a sports club, with a weekly evening and teams in the leagues of the Badischer Schachverband. In Karlsruhe they range from the Karlsruher Schachfreunde 1853 in the Bürgerzentrum Südstadt and the Schachclub uBu in the Old Chapel Pub to Durlach, Neureut, Bulach and Slavija Karlsruhe at the AWO Club 50+. Pforzheim, Baden-Baden, Bruchsal, Rastatt and Ettlingen have clubs of their own, and so do the villages of the Kraichgau, the Hardt, the Murg valley and the Enz.

A few places are not clubs. In Ettlingen the Begegnungszentrum am Klösterle keeps a Tuesday-morning chess group called Die Denker, and the seniorTreff Spessart sets up boards in the local town hall every second Wednesday. The Schachschule Karlsruhe holds a monthly open chess evening in its rooms, and the opens of the area, from the grenke Chess Open to the Sulzfelder Open, are listed here as well.
